STEM Week @ Marchant!

STEM Week @ Marchant! July 14 - 18 2025

From Monday 14th to Friday 18th July, we held a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) week at school. We kicked off the week with a visit from Forensic Frank from Fun Science. He led us through an air themed assembly, using an air canon to shoot paper cups off pupils' heads and popping the lid of a test tube with air pressure. Classes then paired up to join Frank for an Explosive Science workshop where we worked together to inflate a balloon using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, then created elephants' toothpaste. In pairs pupils had the opportunity to recreate the test tube lid popping experiment. We then went outside for some bigger explosions using air pressure.

Across Tuesday and Wednesday, Shane visited each classroom to run a technology session. Each class either used Lego WeDo to develop understanding of algorithms or used some computer aided design to create 3D models which can be 3D printed.

Classes also attempted STEM challenges around themes of air and water. They discussed which image or object from a set might be the odd one out and gave reasons for their decisions. We also looked at some Higher Order Thinking skills questions to encourage discussion and enquiry.

On Thursday, pupils were given the chance to ask their own questions and think of how they could investigate these. Questions included, how long does ice take to melt? and how long does evaporation take? These posed further questions about setting up investigations.
