On Wednesday 26th June, Discovery class continued their fieldwork for the Source to Sea learning experience by visiting a middle section of a river. We went to see the River Stour and Sturminster Newton. First we went to Sturminster Mill to find out how humans have harnessed the power of the water using machines for milling grain and producing flour. We were excited to help the miller and see how some of the old machines worked.
We then walked along a section of the river identifying features such as the bank, the floodplain and meanders. We also discovered that in wet weather the water level can rise a lot and has flooded around the mill.
We sat and enjoyed the shade while further developing our sketching skills.
