On Tuesday 10th January, Invincible and Discovery classes visited Stonehenge to make a link between our previous learning on life in the Stone Age and our new work about the Bronze and Iron Ages. The weather wasn’t very kind to us, so we started with a session in the education room. In the session, we were encouraged to think about the objects which were placed inside the barrows when people in the Bronze Age were buried. We were able to handle some replicas of items that had been discovered in local barrows and suggest why they might have been important.

We then were taken to the monument and listened to our guide tell us about the landscape and explain the positioning of the stones. We were encouraged to look around and think about how the stones might have been moved and the reason for putting them there.

After lunch we visited the exhibition and enjoyed sitting in the middle of the projection of the stones which showed what it might have been like at different times in history. We also looked around at the artefacts and objects which had been discovered by archaeologists. These helped us to understand what life was like over 4000 years ago. Before heading back to school, we looked at the examples of the sledges they might have used to move the stones and what the houses might have been like for the workers.

CC - I liked finding out that they found a body of someone in a barrow

MI – I liked seeing the big stones and thinking about how they put them up

EE – I learned that there were different types of rock that made the stones, I enjoyed seeing something new

TL – It was exciting because I had not gone before

HW – the best bit was trying to pull the rock and going in the houses
