Cheddar Gorge and Caves 13 September 2022 13 September 2022

Invincible, Discovery and Eclipse began our learning experience “History Rocks” with a fascinating day at Cheddar Gorge and Caves.

We started by meeting a “Stone Age Man”, who told us what it was like in Cheddar 10,000 years ago! He explained how early humans lived in the daylight zone at the entrance to the cave and what they needed to be able to survive, including food, water, heat, and shelter.

We then explored Gough’s Cave seeing the rock formations including stalagmites and stalactites. After this, we went to the museum of prehistory where the stone-age man showed us some tools and explained how they were made along with some bones from animals that would have lived in the Cheddar area at the time.

We then watched a demonstration of how early humans created fire and would keep an ember glowing in a mushroom to be able to keep the fire going.

After lunch, we visited the museum to learn more about tools, animals, and cave art from the Stone Age. Before leaving we had the opportunity to try on some animal skins and furs to see what Stone Age clothing would have been like.
